Let's save the turtles

Hotel Vistamar Olive Ridley Turtle Nursery
Species Fact Sheet: Olive Ridley Sea Turtle
As part of our interest to protect our natural resources, we Hotel Vistamar along with the Environmental Youth Club have started the first Artificial Incubation Turtle Egg project in Nicaragua.
The Olive Ridley Turtle is in danger of extinction worldwide because of the irrational consumption of its eggs or its killing to get them, and because of the destruction and reduction of its marine habitat. Therefore, this projects aims to contribute with nature by helping the turtle survive and multiply. Visitors have the opportunity to appreciate this emblematic creature of the sea in our facitlities.
For the season 2009-2010 the first artificial incubation of 200 nests will take place. Each nest will accomodate 100 eggs for a total of 20,000 baby turtles which will be released right in front of Hotel Vistamar.
Plan your trip down here! Come see, participate, help us and take care of the baby turtles!
Hatching of the baby turtles in Vistamar.
Olive Ridley Turtle eggs take from 45 to 50 days to hatch. Baby turtles leave the nests right after occlusion. They head for the ocean and swim towards the currents which take them away from their birth place. They become adults and live for many decades.
Below you can see the dates to see the hatching of the turtles. You can help us collect them and take care of their habitat.
