Olive Ridley Turtle Artificial Incubation Project

With this project hotel Vistamar intends to support the touristic development of the Pacific region by joining efforts with the Government, Marena (Natural Resources and Environment Ministry) and Environmentalist Youth Club to preserve the marine turtles in the Pacific Coast, especially in Pochomil beaches.

This iniciative aims to contribute to national efforts to educate people on environmental care, preservation and management of the turtle population in the Pacific Region of the country, as well as to support the local eco-tourism businesses and the restoration of nature in the shores of the area.

The long-term goal of the project is 10 years. The goal for the 2009-2010 season is the incubation of 200 nests, each accomodating 100 eggs, for a total of 20,000 baby turtles. All of them will be released right in front of Hotel Vistamar.

What does saving the turtles mean for us?

The Olive Ridley Turtle is in danger of extinction worldwide because of the irrational consumption  of its eggs or its killing to get them and because of the destruction and reduction of its marine habitat. Therefore this projects aims to contribute to its survival by helping them reproduce. This will bring more potential to the local tourism. Visitors will surely enjoy the opportunity to appreciate this emblematic creature of the sea.
